In 1848, the Dogra Sikh Raja of Kashmir forcibly occupied these areas and when Pakistan became independent, this area was under the control of Kashmir. In 1948, the people of the region fought for independence and voluntarily joined Pakistan. In 2009, the area was declared independent and elections were held for the first time. As a result, Syed Mehdi Shah of the Pakistan People's Party was elected the first Chief Minister.
